Diamond Pipes
What is a diamond pipe?
A diamond pipe is a type of diamond mine or diamond deposit.
The formation of diamonds began many millions of years ago in the depths of the earth when carbon was crystallised by tremendous heat and pressure. The diamond-bearing ore then rose to the surface during volcanic eruptions. Volcanic activity forced streams of magna (liquid rock) to the surface, carrying with it the diamond crystals. Later, when the volcanic activity subsided and cooling took place, the diamond-bearing rock hardened, encasing the diamonds in solidified magma, vertical volcanic "pipes". One type of these vertical, volcanic pipes are known as “kimberlite pipes”.
