Where are the world’s diamonds mined?

About 40% of diamonds still come from Botswana and South Africa.

Diamond rising prices have stimulated the exploration and mining in more countries such as Canada, Russia, Angola, India, Brazil.

Canada, Russia and West and Central Africa are considered by specialists an important potential diamond source. India and Brazil are prospected by geologists due to the fact that they are known to have been a diamond source in the past.

Strangely, the country with the largest diamond reserve in Africa lives in poverty. Although the fourth largest producer in the world by value and the holder of the largest diamond reserves in Africa, Angola's per capita gross national income GNI is quite low, and people's main means of subsistence is agriculture.

The following is an approximate estimate and pecking order of mine production of diamonds worldwide in 2003:

Botswana – 2.3 US$ billion, 30.4 million carats

Russia – 1.6 US$ billion, 19 million carats

Canada – 1.3 US$ billion, 11.2 million carats

South Africa – 1 US $ billion, 12.8 million carats

Angola – 0.9 US $ billion, 5.5 million carats

Congo – 0.65 US $ billion, 25 million carats

Namibia – 0.45 US $ billion, 1.5 million carats

Australia – 0.4 US $ billion, 31 million carats

South America – 0.1 US$ billion, 0.8 million carats

Others – 0.2 US $ billion, 2.5 million carats
